Maedhros - The Fires of his Heart

Here is my Maedhros, after two weeks, and I could not be more happy with it. (But I'm sure I'll find all the flaws tomorrow morning) While being my best painting so far, I still have a long way to go, technique wise, until I feel completely comfortable with aquarelle. It was a very fun process, don't get me wrong, especially his face and background I am very happy with and feel I did somewhat how I wanted, while hair is still very hard. I do realise that I need to practice other types of paintings, not just close ups! Especially backgrounds I want to experiment a bit more with.

Here is Maedhros, for my Sons of Feanor-series. I knew I already painted him, but I wanted it to be much better because he is after all my favourite of the sons, and I have grown quite a bit since the first painting I made of him.

In this painting he is watching the ships burning at Losgar, his heart burning with fear and anger for his fathers actions, and yet he cannot abandon his love for his father and his faith in him. To me Maedhros is such an interesting character because he seems very conflicted within himself, being of a sound mind, probably more so than Feanor, mixed with the death of his younger brother I can't but think how he must have hated his father at that moment, but his honour denies him from giving up his oath. I could go on an on, but at least I hope this explain his expression I've tried to convey here, and that you agree in my interpretation. I have heard that some find him very young-looking, and while I did not intend for him to be quite so young, it is after all early in his life, this being the moment when he "grew up" so to speak, to understand his fathers cruelty.

(I feel I need to say that Feanor is my favorite of the Noldor, maybe especially because he is so damaged and strong-minded ^^')
